Water Wall Maintenance

Water walls do have an element of maintenance associated with them, but, our water walls are equipped with systems to reduce maintenance to a minimum.  Water wall maintenance is required to address the following four basic problems:

  • Soluble mineral buildup
  • Algae growth
  • Airborne dirt capture
  • Water evaporation

Mineral Buildup

Tap water contains, to varying degrees, soluble minerals that can build up on a water wall creating white deposits.  We offer two solutions for preventing mineral build up.

Algae Growth

Algae are the main reason water walls can have an unpleasant odor.  If you buy a water wall that does not properly suppress algae growth it will start to smell in around a week or so.  We have two methods of addressing alga growth.  Incidentally, algae feed on soluble minerals, so not addressing the above problems compounds alga growth.

Airborne Dirt Capture

Water walls are also great at capturing airborne dirt and pollen etc. which also promotes an unpleasant smell.  We have solved this problem and suggest when shopping for a water wall you check the water wall is airborne dirt tolerant.

Water Evaporation

Water wall water evaporates at a surprising rate, particularly in low humidity environments.  We offer auto fill water walls for customers not wishing to periodically fill their water wall.  Water walls may need topping up every two or three days if running for extended periods during the day and are not auto fill.

None of the solutions to the above problems are extremely complex, it is more an issue of recognizing the problems and locating reliable products to address each issue.  Another challenge is incorporating such solutions into a water wall in an accessible yet confined space.

We see solutions ranging from purging the tank using computer control through to ozone technology.  We use neither feeling that computer control adds expense and unreliability and also adds load to water input purification.  Input purification elements have a finite life so what better way to shorten that than by filling a water wall tank on a regular basis.  Ozone is also designed for outside (ventilated) use.  Too much ozone also creates a water wall odor problem as ozone in higher concentrations has an acrid smell.
